VW Factory Paint Codes: A Complete Guide
Every aircooled VW left the factory with a specific paint code recorded on the data sticker. Understanding these codes helps you verify originality, order correct refinish paint, and document your restoration.
The L-Number System
VW used the L-number (Lackierung) system for all exterior paint codes. The format is a letter L followed by 2–4 characters. Examples:
Where to Find the Paint Code
- Data sticker: In the luggage compartment (trunk lid), glove box, or spare tire well. Look for a line starting with the L-code.
- VIN plate: The riveted metal plate often includes the paint code near the chassis number.
- Build sheet: Original factory paperwork lists the paint code alongside M-codes and other specs.
Year-Specific Colors
VW changed their color palette annually. Some colors, like L41 (Black), were available for decades, while others like L620 (Savanna Beige) were only offered for 2–3 years. Knowing which colors were available in which years is critical for verifying original paint claims.
The Aircooled Index paint archive covers 384 factory colors from 1938 to 1979 across all platforms (Beetle, Bus, Type 3, Karmann Ghia), with visual color chips and year availability.
Refinish Cross-References
When repainting your VW to factory specifications, you need a refinish code that modern paint suppliers can use. The Aircooled Index database includes PPG/Ditzler, Glasurit, and other refinish system cross-references for most colors, making it easy to order the correct paint.
